Bed Sharing and The Montessori Bed

Here is my ramp!

Down it I go!

Out of my own bed, and crawling I go!

We've been sleeping with Sebastian in our bed since he was born.  Once he started rolling and moving around, I must admit he fell off the bed, face first, twice.  It was scary.  So I removed the bed frame, borrowed two guard rails, and built two exits/entrances with a "baby ramp".

The look on his face when he first started using the ramp was of glowing self-confidence and excitement!  There was no going back after I saw that.  We baby proofed (still more to be done) and blocked off the kitchen and front door.

In the morning when he wakes up, he chirps with glee when he crawls toward his ramp.  He decides when he is done nursing, and he decides when he wants to go play and explore.  It's really fun, and we all love it.  I can't wait until he can crawl back into the bed, too!

My only concern now is having my mattress on the floor and it getting stale underneath.  Also, it's kind of killing my back!  So I'm looking into a very low support system and came across pallets as an idea.  Although I actually think just sawing the feet nearly off a cheap IKEA wood frame might allow my mattress to conform to my body better.  Anyway, this looks quite nice!:
I'd have to figure out about the baby ramp, as there isn't much space between the end of the bed and the door, and we have the ramps built up from old blankets and towel.  The ramp would have to be more angled than is currently.  Once he can crawl better that might not be an issue.
I actually am currently using my foot board as a headboard as I don't like having our pillows against the cold outer wall.  Our bedroom is very cold, which is another reason our beautiful crib never quite took off.  It is still handsomely sitting in the corner, a reminder that my preconception of parenthood has been turned on its head!  It was used for a few naps, but mostly it was a wonderful nesting gift that made me feel loved and secure about my impending first born child--all from a beloved old friend!
Unwittingly, I have been following a lot of the Montessori method precepts.  In fact, the "Montessori Bed" is a mattress on the floor for the child, in lieu of a crib.  We have put his crib mattress in the living room as a warmer place for him to watch TV, play, practice getting on his knees, and to sit with him and read.  Sometimes we even take naps there, or I stop to nurse him during the day.
I read that many families in Japan co-sleep for the first year and of course many people there sleep on the floor on mats and futons.  With minimal furniture, baby can more safely explore the environment.  I have a lot of furniture, and baby proofing has included even removing the knobs from my lower dresser drawers.
But about the mattress....sleeping on the floor can change the performance of your mattress.  My latex mattress is now killing me because it has become a bit mushy and unforgiving. I want a new mattress anyway, as I'm on an anti-flame retardant crusade and would like a chemical free natural latex/wool bed.   Going flame retardant free is another post, though!
Anyway, he is sleeping right now, and I need to clean up the kitchen and make a quick snack.  I will write more soon about our co-sleeping experiences.  I've also promised a cloth diaper post, and, of course, I have two months worth of photos to share of our little guy.

Good Morning!
Sebastian loves drinking out of my cups!
He sips and he slurps!
Blows bubbles,
and burps!

Hug O'War

Hug O'War

I will not play at tug o' war.
I'd rather play at hug o' war,
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses,
And everyone grins,
And everyone cuddles,
And everyone wins.

Sheldon Allan Silverstein

Sebastian has started hugging me, and it makes me the happiest person in the universe! Happy Six Months Old!

Babu, Babu, oh I do love you

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Learning to play....

Once Sebastian turned the corner of five months the changes have been remarkable.  He can reach out and pick things up, delicately finger objects, and his eyes are opening to the world around him.

Vintage Baby Photo

This is as close as Sebastian will probably get to looking like the "Gerber Baby"!  At four months he's not very chubby or even classicaly "baby cute"; he is, however, full of personality and has a winning smile, and shining eyes that know how to find the camera!

Even with all of that I still have to work a little to get a good shot.  I talk to him and try to get him to laugh (he usually is entranced by the camera and ignores me).  After I weed through the photos, and it does help to have a camera that can take rapid fire frames, I pick a few that I fool around with in the basic processing available in the free program Picasa.  I can't wait until I can get a new laptop and *real* photo processing programs because they are amazing!

As you can see from the first picture below the photo out of the camera is a little dark.  So I upped the highlights and then gave it a little white "vignette" border to put the focus on his face.  I then tried the new "infared" action and it suddenly made him look like a vintage photograph from the 1940's!  I'd tried the black and white but it left his face too flat.  This one emphasized his expression.

Four Months!

Here are a few pictures from the
past two weeks or so.  You are growing like lighting!  You still go on the same daily walks, and read the same books, but notice something new every day.

  You suddenly want to
touch everying

And put everything in your mouth.  Even thyme!

Something new is music hour.  You love dancing!  You dance when we sing.  Right now your favorite is "dans mee met Nijntje" --it's very cute!!

You love to "grip" and often grab my hair, shirt, and everything else.  If possible you then put it in your mouth!

Jan and Lies sent you a cute outfit.  I love Holland!

While mamma is working you get "daddy daycare" and a bottle of breastmilk.  Thanks to the lightweight silicone bottle you figured out how to hold it and drink!
You can roll from your back to your side, and your side to your front, but haven't done both together!  You laugh a lot!  But cry a lot more now because those two darned bottom teeth still haven't broken the surface and make everyone miserable.  Teeth!!
